The unique characteristic of corrugated cardboard is the fluted (wave-like) layer. Corrugated cardboard is made of alternating flat and fluted layers pasted along the line of contact between the upper and lower surface of the wave and flat layers of cardboard.

Corrugated cardboard is classified based on the number of layers of paper used for production of corrugated cardboard sheets and labeled with letters in accordance with the relevant number of layers:
- Т — three-layered corrugated cardboard with two flat layers and one corrugated layer.
- Flute Е (micro fluted cardboard), height: 1.6 mm;
- Flute B, height: 3.2 mm;
- Flute C, height: 4.4 mm.
- П — five-layered corrugated cardboard with three flat layers (two external and one internal) and two fluted layers.
- Flute CB, height: 6.5 mm;
- Flute CE, height: 5.4 mm;
- Flute BE, height: 4.6 mm.
